New To Benignus?

Welcome to Benignus Elementary!  We are so happy you have joined the Benignus family.  We hope that the information below will help you learn a little about Benignus .  If you have any questions or want to get involved with the PTO please contact us at benignuspto@gmail.com.

School Information Guide

Attendance

If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason, please call the office at 832-484-7750 before 9:45 a.m. and leave a message on the attendance line (option #3). If you need to speak to someone concerning the absence, call the Registrar at 832-484-7708.

When your child returns to school, it is necessary to bring a written excuse signed by the parent as to why the child was absent within five days of the absence. If they have seen a health care professional, please ask for a note from that person and send it to school with your child the day that they return to school.

If a student is absent more than 18 days without a medical note or extenuating circumstances, they may not be given credit, and the campus attendance committee will review their attendance record.

Early Dismissals

If it is necessary for you to take your child out of school early for any reason, please send a note with them in the morning letting us know the child’s name, teacher, what time they will be picked up and who will be picking them up. Your child should come to the Front Office at the 8:00am arrival bell to obtain his/her pass and sticker. This way we can have the child in the office and ready to go when you get here. Please be sure that the person picking them up is prepared to show a photo I.D. before the child is released.  Only a parent authorized on the AGR card on file may provide an early dismissal request. Parents may not take home the child of another family without prior written consent.

Lost & Found

A Lost & Found area is located in the cafeteria. To avoid losing clothing and other items, please label your child’s belongings. At the end of each semester, all items left in the Lost & Found will be donated.

Medications

Klein ISD school personnel are not permitted to give medication of any kind, including analgesics, similar preparations, or any other drugs, unless the parent requests in writing that there is a need for such medication and the parent provides the medication.  When administering prescription medication, the school district requires a written statement from a physician licensed to practice in the State of Texas. Please refer to the Student Handbook for further clarification.  All medication must be in its original container.

In addition, all medications, both prescription and over the counter, must be brought to and picked up at the clinic by a parent or guardian. Students are not allowed to bring medications to school or keep them in their possession. No vitamins, health food, or herbal preparations will be given. If you have any questions, please feel free to call the clinic at 832-484-7714.

School Hours

Morning: The school hours for elementary students are from 8:15am to 3:35pm. The tardy bell will ring at 8:15am. For safety reasons we ask that all walkers and bike riders enter the school grounds via the bike path. Bike riders are expected to walk their bicycles as soon as they come on campus. The bicycle racks are located at the north end of the building. The bus circle is reserved for school and day care buses only.  Children will wait on the porch until the 8:00am bell, except in inclement weather, when they will wait inside. Those eating breakfast will enter the building at 7:50am. We would greatly appreciate it if you would encourage your child not to arrive prior to 7:50am, as there is no adult supervision until that time. Students arriving early for special programs or tutoring, must enter the building independently. Parents may not walk their children to class.

Afternoon: ALL students will be dismissed at the 3:35pm bell, regardless of grade or transportation home. Carpools will pick up their riders at the front porch. The last names of the children in the carpool should be displayed so they are clearly visible to the teachers on duty. We ask that drivers remain in cars and the children will be escorted to you. If you wish to come up to the building, you will need to meet your child at the exit on the side of the building by the bike racks. Non-staff members will NOT be allowed in the building at dismissal. Building doors are locked at 3:pm. This is for the children's safety, and we appreciate your cooperation.

Spirit Days

Benignus Spirit Days are every Friday. All students and staff members may wear Benignus spirit shirts and jeans. Throughout the year we will have fun dress-up days to promote academic endeavors or character development. Please see the Benignus Homepage for the dates of these special events.

Student Dress Code

Shorts may be worn to school. Students may wear shorts that come to mid-thigh or below (walking or Bermuda-type). No bicycle-type shorts, cutoffs with frayed bottoms, gymnastic or athletic-type attire is allowed. Any straps on girls’ shirts must be at least one inch in width and no off-the-shoulder blouses are allowed.

Students will be monitored to help them know what is acceptable and what is not.  Parents’ help is appreciated and may keep a student from the embarrassment of being sent to change clothes because of inappropriate attire. Please refer to the Student Handbook for the official Klein ISD dress code.

Student Messages

Only messages of an emergency nature can be relayed to students. Therefore, please be sure that your child knows how and with whom they are going home and what to do in unusual circumstances or in inclement weather before coming to school.

Teacher Conferences

If you desire a conference with your child’s teacher, please call or e-mail the teacher directly to set up a conference. It will be advantageous under normal circumstances if you give the teacher about three weeks to work with your child before setting up a conference. It takes about that long to get to know each student.

Wednesday Folders

You can expect your child to bring a folder home every Wednesday. It is our hope that you and your child will take this opportunity to go over the papers together before you sign and return the folder on the following day. Your child will appreciate your praise for accomplishments and progress made, as well as your encouragement and understanding in those areas where improvement is needed.

Visitors

We are very proud of Benignus and your children. You are encouraged to visit with us.  However, in order to ensure maximum protection for your children, you must sign in at the front office and receive a visitor's tag. The teachers have been instructed to escort persons without a tag to the office in order to obtain one.

Library

The goal of the library program at Benignus is to support classroom instruction and promote reading for pleasure. We strive to provide students, faculty and the community with tools necessary to develop critical thinking and analytical problem-solving skills. Providing access to print, non-print and electronic resources for all of our patrons, facilitates this goal.

Students are encouraged to read through scheduled weekly library times, open access to the library, and special library promotions. Students in Pre-K and Kindergarten may check out one book during their class’s library time. First through fifth graders may check out two books during class time. It is not necessary to wait until a scheduled library time to return books and check out new ones. All students may return library books and check out books between 8:00am & 8:30am. Students may also come to the library at any time during the school day with permission from their classroom teacher.

Music

Students will attend music classes twice a week for 45 minutes. Students work on correct use of the singing voice, movement, steady beat, instrumental techniques, and reading and writing music. Fourth and fifth graders will play the recorder.

Extracurricular activities include 4th grade chime choir, 4th and 5th grade vocal choir, 5th grade percussion ensemble and 5th grade string orchestra.

Safety Patrol

The safety patrol is designed to give our 5th graders an opportunity to be role models for our younger students while helping keep our campus safe. They serve as extra eyes and ears for our staff as well as helping hands for young children. These students are chosen based on good character and the ability to uphold the school rules. Several students from each class serve every six weeks.

Extra Curricular Activities

Benignus hosts a variety of extra curricular, after school activities spanning from athletically based to academic challenges. Information about these will come home in your child's Wednesday folder with information on how to signup and fees associated. There is something for everyone at Benignus!
